The last week or 2 has been spent on one wild goose chase after another, searching for banks, embassies, etc which don't exist or have moved to the other side of the city. Still, at least we've seen a lot of different parts of Istanbul and finally have our visas for Iran and Uzbekistan.
Yesterday was the first day of Bayram (Turkish for Eid). Every household that can afford to slaughters a sheep, goat or cow, eats a lot of ıt, then gives the rest to the poor. Apparently over 4 million animals are slaughtered across Turkey. All over the more traditional parts of the city there were cows runing amok (nearly charging into Arthur), animals being slaughtered (Halal style of course), cats and dogs running about with animal parts in their mouths, blood in the gutters, and the mosques were turned into butchers. It smells quite bad. I went vegetarian for a day, but today we're going to eat the 3kg of meat that Basia, our Polish friend, was given.
