We took a 2 hour overcrowded boat across the lake to Isla Del Sol at 1.30 the next afternoon. We took our full rucksacks because we didn´t like the look of our hotel staff, and instantly regretted it when we arrived at the Island and saw the 500 or so steps up the side of a steep steep hill!! Arrghhh! We had to lug 15 kilos of stuff each of the side of roasting hot mountain with absolutely NO air! It was so high up, we were gasping at every step!
Finally, we found a reasonable hostel for about 2.50 each for a double room. There was no running water on the island either - all water had to be dragged up in containers by donkeys from the lake to the hostels´ watertanks every morning. Poor donkeys! It was just my luck when the water ran out in the middle of my shower, arrghhh! After a nap, we had a gorgeous trout dish in the hostel restaurant, and then an early night.
The next day we weren´t getting the boat back until 4, so 5 of us got together and hiked across the island. It was really beautiful, with terraces on every hill side, and some lovely beaches too. At times you forget you´re on a Lake since it´s so big. The altitude affected us here more than anywhere yet and all of us got light headed and headaches. Stupid me never put suncream on the back of my legs and they were FRIED! The sun is so strong over here.
After catching the boat back, we checked back into another hotel for a night and booked a bus to La Paz the following day....where we would spend New Years ... (probably for the first time ever with sunburn! :))
Silly silly me.
Am x
