We said goodbye to the newlyweds on Sunday as they headed west on their Honeymoon, and on Monday we flew to Melbourne, to visit Kate and Juan near Geelong. The misInformation woman at the desk in the airport insisted that there was no way into the city besides the skybus ($15). No public transport whatsoever. Erm right, we found that a bit farfetched and wombled outside where we found the bus stop for the public bus ($2.50), as well as several smaller shuttle busses going to different suburbs. Unfortunately we had just missed the 12:30 bus and had to wait for the 2:00 one, so we took the opportunity to confront the stupid b**ch at the desk. "Oh those busses go THROUGH the city, not TO the city". Whatever. She didn't seem to take on board our comments about being more informative in the future. I hope she gets hit by the aforementioned public bus :)
Anyway, we popped into Melbourne for a couple of hours before getting the train to Geelong, where we picked our bags up off the station platform, they having been loaded onto the train for us, and met up with Kate and Juan who drove us to their lovely new home in Ocean Grove, where we spent the evening catching up and discussing our upcoming trip to South America, as Juan is Colombian, and they have both lived in Chile for a while.
The weather so far has been amazing - clear blue skies and temperatures reaching the high-twenties (we hear it's raining in Sydney!!). We spent our first morning taking a long walk to the nearby beach and soaking up the rays. Ocean Grove is a quiet suburb but gets much busier in the summer season since many people have beach houses here. Today, Kate and Juan kindly lent us their car,so we drove to Barwon Heads and Queenscliff just for the hell of it. There's been no cold weather recently so the whole area is infested with flies - they are SOOOO annoying, always buzzing around your head and neck - no matter how often you wave them away they come back, often hitching a ride long distances on your t-shirt. And they especially love humans drizzled in deet-sauce. So the flies make outdoors activities a bit of an ordeal unfortunately. Don't ya feel sorry for us?
Tomorrow is our last day in Australia before we head across the date line on what could be a hellish flight - something like 16 hours or so. There's talk of thunderstorms in the region tomorrow evening, so hopefully it won't dampen our last day here too much, we'll have to see. So until sometime in the past future or something like that, after we cross the date line and land in Chile, take care.
K
