More fun times were had in Chicago!
Despite the shite location of our accommodation. All the hostels were fill. We decided against trying "Fat Joes Last Resort" hotel - reviews posted on the internet matched its name.
The closest cheapest place we could find was a 30-40min train ride and 10min bus ride from the centre of town - frustrating, but we lived with it.
We did the #1 toursity thing in Chicago - the Sears Tower. Which is some really tall building that used to hold a bunch of records but doesnt anymore. I went up it 12 years ago when I was here last, when it used to still hold some of those records. However when I was there all those years ago, I couldnt see anything at all, due to it snowing. Brilliant sun this time so I could see long way.
After that we had a walk down town and had a look in the nice park that runs along the foreshore of the lake (I remember throwing snow at people with an ice bucket in this park last time I came here), and also checking out the fountain from Married with Children - funny how things stick in your mind for so long. Also had a look at the cute Navy Peir.
That evening was the Aussie Rules grand final. I dont like the sport, but Derek is a fanatic so he had some tickets to go watch it that evening in an international bar, which was correspondingly taken over by Aussies for the night. I had a few drinks and some how kept myself entertained (loose definition of the word). Even Derek admitted it was the worst ever AFL game so it was not that exciting for me. Ended up home at some silly time like 4am grrr
I dont really remember what we did in the morning of the next day, but in the afternoon we went to the aquarium, which was nice. It had a 4D film with spongebob which was cool. That evening we went out on the town. We jumped off the train at the recommended station and walked into the first bar we saw (well almost the first). Ended up talking to some locals and having a great night.
The next day Nicole (formerly of Cleveland fame) decided to catch a flight with a friend of hers who was visiting Cleveland, but returning to Chicago. We had lunch and checked out the reflective blobby thing in the park and relaxed for a while. We went back to Nicole's friends place, where he was busy repainting the floors and walls for halloween - yup thats correct. Then had an absoulutely fantastic thai dinner, and saw Across the Universe. Which featured about 30 beatles songs and lots of crazy wacky drug-induced scenes.
We found a salsa place that night and I had a few dances, and a few locals decided to show Nicole what salsa was all about. Derek was bored out of his brain. Ahhh sweet revenge for the AFL match.
Next day it was off to Kansas!
