Cannakale and Anzac Cove

Text written in: English

19 Oct 07

Arrived in Cannakale to take our tour of the Battlefields of Gallipoli and a special emphasis for us Aussies and Kiwis of Anzac Cove.

The guide was average at best but that didn't detract from the impact of both Anzac Cove and Lone Pine. To see the terrain that our diggers faced we had a whole range of emotions.  It was quite peaceful at both sites as each one of us dealt with the experience in our own ways.  Of course the two of us were our normal emotional selves and had come well prepared with sufficient tissues to last the distance.

What should have been a four and a half trip turned into a full day trip.  Thank goodness they sent us off with packed lunches as the driver and guide misunderstood each other.  We had to navigate around road works that saw us drive past Anzac Cove five times.  We did a fifteen point turn in the most scarest and narrowest part of the road with our back end poking out over the cliff.  In typical Aussie style someone shouted out "tell us when we're hanging over the edge"!

Returned back to the ship via a ferry which we should have been on at 2 O'Clock and didn't get on until 4pm making us return to the ship at 4.50pm.  Not bad for a trip that should have had us back by mid afternoon and was one of the cheapest tours we have paid for so far.
