14 Oct 07 - Pompeii
Well I suppose it is expected that all these days sailing and a different port each day that we would get our days mixed up! Our last post said we would be at sea all the following day - we lied... We sailed to Sorrento instead, our sailing day is tomorrow.
There are a couple themes that have emerged in our ramblings about our day tours that you may have picked up by now. The first being the trials and tribulations of finding a decent public toilet. Now the female readers will sympathise with us about trying to hover and hold everything up off the floor whilst holding on to a door that has no lock! Men have it sooooo easy.
The best way to get around dirty disgusting toilets is the drinking of coffee. If you buy a coffee then you get to use the toilet - therefore we are able to discern what is a good and bad cup of coffee. Jo has given up trying for a latte - cappucinno is tried only sometimes but the coffee of choice is now expresso with a couple of sugars! We had a second best coffee so far in Sorrento!!
We started off early today and caught the Tender to the Port. We were put onto a little schuttle bus and driven up a very tight and winding road to meet our tour guide and the touring coach to take us to Pompeii. The roads and traffic continue to amaze us - how these drivers squeeze these buses through tight lanes and roads is unbelievable. You have to picture very narrow road ways with cars parked either side sometimes double parked and not always parellel to the road and have two way traffic drive through. Karen kept her eyes closed for some of it as it was just too hair raising.
The ruins of Pompeii is awe inspiring. Whilst the landscape is very grey and not necessarily pretty it was fascinating to see this city. The pathways are the original cobblestones and they are not even in fact they are very uneven. It was explained by the guide that the big stones in the centre of a cross road was to allow people to step off the path and cross the road to the other side without stepping in the sewerage. Apparently they didn't have sewerage systems in Pompeii.
The place was jam packed with tourists -lucky we aren't visiting these sites during the peak season as it would be bedlum.
After our trip to Pompeii we travelled back to Sorrento and had lunch al fresco with a nice glass of wine.
