PAI, THAILAND. We decided to head for Pai (north of Chiang Mai) for a couple of nights. It took about 3 hours to get there and it made us feel a bit sick going up these steep mountains. My ears popped at one stage as well.
Pai is like a large village in Ireland. Very narrow streets and only a few of em. After a while we found the "Golden Hut" guesthouse by the river. Very basic huts but they had hot water and cost only 2 euro each per night. On the bus we had met another Canadian called Jane. Went for some mexican food and a few beers that night. Overall this place was very quiet, but nice and relaxing all the same.
Day 2: Feeling guilty about the lack of exercise since we started travelling almost a month ago, we rented bicycles and headed for the mountains. We went for the hot springs about 12km from town. It rained part of the way which was great to cool us down. The hot springs were so hot. At the top the water is 80degrees celcius! We got into the water further down stream where it felt like a steaming hot bath - about 40 degrees maybe?
Pai is known for its live music scene and we saw some great bands playing in different pubs in town. Overall though, Pai is pretty dead in low season and you could probably do it in one night.
We wanted to go straight to Laos from here but its not that easy of a trip so we are going back to Chiang Mai to sort that trip out.
