Crystal Clear Water

Kaş. Sunday, March 16th.

Another relaxing day. Have our own small private bus, which means we can stop for those Kodak moments as they occur. Drove along the coastline of the Aegaen and Mediterranean Sea. Very pretty. Stopped at the larger town of Fethiye (population 50,000) before we got to our destination, which was the very small town of Kaş (population 8,000).

Both towns are totally orientated to the tourist, especially to the British. Along this portion of the coast, the population of permanent residents has a high percentage of UK retirees (like me as that is what I am currently, a retiree). The area has beautiful views of the sea and a mild climate. There are boats (gullets) which in the summer you rent for two and three day cruises, like in Greece. In the summer, our tour would include this excursion, but not at this time of year

Wandered along the sea and even went in for a dip. Refreshing (which is code for rather cold, got out ASAP). Teamed up with a shy Korean girl in our group. Pushed her to climb to the top of a hill for a spectacular view and to climb a mountain side to go into a tomb. She was like one of my students - I pushed her limits a bit, but she was grateful afterwards.

Definitely this is a Turkish spring; the lemon and orange trees are full of fruit and need to be harvested. Pleasant low twenties temp.

If you are intersted, I was able to load some of the photos of the Two Palaces onto that entry. A virus has corrupted many of the photos but some survived. May re-visit the old palace again if I have time when I am in Istanbul on Sunday morning.

Photos / videos of "Crystal Clear Water":

Fethiye and the Taurus mountain range behind it. Fethiye harbour and the gulet boats, which are used for two and three day cruises. It is amazing that an island might be only a few km from the Turkish mainland, but it would be Greek. The Greeks got almost all the islands, and Turkey got the ones that are part of Europe in a peace treaty. Birds on a wire.
Fethiye and Kas were Greek communities before 1920. As part of a peace treaty, 1,000,000 Turks living in Greece returned to Turkey and 500,000 Greeks in Turkey returned to Greece. These two cities were Greek, but are no longer. Lovely bay along the Mediterranean Sea, between Dalyan and Kas. The water is crystal clear and sooo turquoise. Small Odeon theatre in Kas. Swam in this cove. The water is not as warm as you may imagine, but my is it crystal clear. View of Kas from a hilltop. That island off to the left is Greek. The Greeks from that island do their shopping in Kas, Turkey. Lycian tomb cut into the mountain side behind Kas. Another Lycian tomb. It is in someone's back yard. There are so many ruins and remains in Turkey that it is almost impossible to preserve them all. Lemon tree waiting to be harvested.
