Arrived in Chrischurch after a lovely 1 hour flight. I'd been advised to get a window seat as the views were spectacular.. which I asked for and got.. only they gave a seat on the other side so I just saw sea.. still beautiful but not the Alps! I managed to hop over to the other side to an empty row and take a couple of snaps. It was stunning.
I found my hostel with no bother.. and checked in. there were 2 Irish girls (Niamh and Julie) in my room and one Australian (Naddia) .. we all got on really well and hung out for the next few days together. On our first night we headed down to the bar in the hostel for a couple of drinks and then as these things tend to go we headed to an Irish bar down the road, then to a cocktail bar with free margaritas (always a bad sign) .. some girls bailed out then but Niamh and I stuck it out and headed to a few other places. It was a brilliant night and needless to say we were all feeling it the next day! The next day Niamh, Julie and I crawled out of bed and made it to the Gondolas which take you up for a spectaular outlook on Christchurch.. the fresh air did is all some good! We then came back and we all headed out for some delish sushi that I had found the night before. The next day Naddia, Niamh, Julie and I headed to the Hanmer Springs natural sulphar pools. It was a two hour drive (with breathtaking scenery) then we arrived and spent a few hours soaking in the 36 degree pools before braving the smelly sulphar ones that were 41 degrees.. I only noticed the 'sulphar pools will tarnish silver jewelry' after I got out of the pool. Needless to say it turned all my beautiful jewelry into something resembling gun metal.. fingers crossed it'll clean up when I get my hands on some silvo!! After the pools we had a couple of hours to kill and decided to hire a 4 person pedal bike.. it was hilarious.. the four of us trying to to pedal up hills whilst pissing ourselves laughing.. not to mention ringing the bell to every passer by and waving.. well.. we had to do something to amuse ourselves.. this things lasted for an hour! We then came back to the hoste.l.. the girls went out for dinner (I passed as my wallet had taken a bashing over the past couple of days and I had a reality check moment) but I did join them for a farewell beer laster that night and Naddia was leaving the next day :o(
Niamh, Julie and I headed to watch a Rubgy game.. Canterbury against Manawatu. We'd just come back from Canterbury a few days before and we felt obliged to support them.. we must have been a good omen.. they won (55 to 10)! It was nothing to do with the fact that they were a fitter than any man/animal I have ever seen in my entire life.. just a big ball of muscle! It was a great day.. we then headed back to the hostel. The girls packed all their gear whilst I finished this book that I had become completely immersed in. We had a farwell dinner together and then headed up to the room for an early night. They left first thing in the morning.. and then there was one! I spent the entire morning booking my trip for the next 3 and a bit weeks.. it came to a cool $550 .. once the moisture came back to my mouth I handed my credit card over and closed my eyes. I suppose it's not that much but it sure feels like a hell of a lot! Then headed to a second hand book store .. handed over my 3 day old novel in exchange for another fix of Marian Keyes.
That's it.. up to date! Off to Queenstown for some serious nonsense tomorrow.. bring it on!!!!!!!!!!!!
