*** I couldn't find city Khiam from this web site, so I choose a near by town Nabatîyé replaced ***
I decided to go to Khiam to have a look for the Detention Camp. Originally the camp was build on a hill top date back to French time, it was used as a prison when Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon. Some of the prisoner died at that time. The camp was held as a museum after Israeli Army withdrawal in year 2000, and completely destroyed by Israel Forces in 2006.
To go there, we need to go to a army base in Saida to apply a permit, because Khiam is very close to Israel border, which is one of the sensitive area in the country. applying a permit, actually it was just register. We hand in a photocopy of the passport and a photo, then we went out from the army base without anything, nor even a piece of paper. We got a taxi to go there, at one of the military checkpoint, they made a phone call to Saida to verify. I thought that was the reason we have to do the registration.
The cheapest way to go there would be take a minibus to Saida; then a services taxi to Nabatîyé; then another services taxi to one of the town between Nabatîyé and Khiam; then hire a car to Khiam. So..., we did hire a taxi directly from Saida.
