My Father often calls backpackers in Ireland snails, because they wear their houses on their backs. I have been calling myself a bit of a snail of late. This is due to how slowly I have been moving, but no more.
In the last 8 days I’ve been in 4 countries, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras & now El Salvador. I´ve already spent a lot of time in B. & G. I plan on returning to Honduras, so its not like I´m turning a new leaf, or changing to new shell. I´ll slow down again in time.
After 4 buses and a simple border crossing, I eventually made it to La Palma in El Salvador. My first impressions are that at least some of the people here are richer than the other Spanish speaking cousins in Central America.
La Palma is a Pretty little town with houses, walls lamp posts all painted with a particularily El Salvadorian style of art. Supposedly 75% of the town´s income is generated from this Art and Craft style. There are loads of Artesian style shops, but I don’t see anyone buying as of yet.
I was theonly person staying in my hotel including staff, and I had been given a key to open the front door.At about 7:30 I arrived back to the hotel but I couldn´t manage to open it. I asked some randomn person to help and he very kindly brought me to the owners house. Unfortunately it was empty. Next I coopted some of the neighbours to help out. Afterwhat seemed like a neighbourhood watch meeting we eventually manage to open the door. Very friendly bunch indeed.
There are some nice hikes to do around La Palma, but currently getting a lot of rain. The same weather system as Hurricane Dean is hitting us at the moment. Rain, Lightning and thunder. No wind though.
Have Fun,
Steve.
