Chateau Versailles

Text written in: English

Versailles is a town located about ten miles to the southwest of Paris. In Versailles you will find one of France's major tourist attractions: the Chateau, built by Louis XIV, the Sun King. It attracts about 30,000 tourists a day, which makes something like 10 million per year. Versailles is not just a chateau, it is also used as a major center for government work. When you walk up the stone walkway and through it*s gates a sense of a powerful reminder of the past, and the grandness with which the monarchs ruled their domains. It is unbelieveable how large this palace is. You really have to see it to believe it. Pictures do not do any justice. I think to truely see the chateau of Versailles you have to visit it at least three times. I was only able to walk 1/4 of the chateau. I was most impressed with the gardens and the fountains that fill in the surrounding areas around Versailles. The whole expierence was kinda overwhelming seeing how these rich monarchs lived during the time of the french revolution, when their poor countrymen where fighting and dying in the streets only miles away. History comes alive only when you allow yourself to become apart of it and expierence what it tells.
