Hola! Am in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia (though apparently the legal captial is Sucre ) We arrived here a few days ago and went out on the town. La Paz is a crazy, bustling city surrounded by snow topped mountains. It is the highest city in the world at around 3600m above sea level. The weather is really hot here too! We found a Burger King the other day too and stuffed ourselves.
The next day we decided we would do Death Road! The world's most dangerous road!!!!! It's a 64km cycle from La PAz to the town of Coroico. Hundreds of people have died on this route mainly due to buses falling off the cliffs. Only 10 cyclists have died so we decided to do it! We were taken to the start of the road and given really good bikes. Was feeling less scared when i got a chance to practice riding the bikes, nicknamed 'one night in prison' cos of how your ass will be feeling afterwards. We were in a group of 14 other people and had 2 guides. We started on normal road which was fun. Could go really fast overtaking other buses and cars! When we reached the official start it started to get a bit difficult. The road was gravel and there was a lot of mist. There was also blind corners and the drops were basically vertical. One wrong turn and its over! During one of our breaks we heard that a girl on one of the groups in front had an accident. We offered our help and were driven to the crash site. She had fallen off her bike and scratched her head, bleeding quite badly and was unconscious for a about a minute. Me and Javier helped treat her and sent her off to hospital. If she had fallen a few metres to the left she would have fallen a few hundred feet and mostly likely would have died.
Continuing with the ride we were all a bit shaken after the accidetn but continued. It was amazing cycling down at incredible speeds. Great views and massive drops on the side! A couple of time i nearly fell off cos i was going too fast and massive rocks were in the way! After 64kmn and about 4 hours we completed the ride. Was an amazing experience! We had a buffet lunch, got the tshirt and showered before finding a hotel nearby.
We stayed in the Hotel Esmeralda which is a beautiful resort with banana trees and citrus trees. We had a swim, slept in hammocks with condors flying over us and basically chilled for 2 days here. Cost us 20pounds each for 2 days of luxury!
Now we are back in La paz but not staying here long though. Our bus to Uyuni, in the south of Bolivia, is leaving in a few hours. We booked a tour to the salt plains which should be spectacular. Hopefully we will be in Chile by around Thursday! Will try to keep you posted. and put some pics up. Chaio.
