Curry for Christmas!

Text written in: English

Being thousands of miles from home, in a hot, sticky climate AND having to work every day of the ‘holidays’, isn’t what most of us dream about when we think of Christmas! So the only remedy we found was coming home from work on Xmas Eve, putting our glad rags on and heading to the nightclub over the road!! Fortunately ‘Zouk’ was a well known club in KL, more due to its’ famous sister club in Singapore. But with expensive drinks and slow bar staff who wouldn’t be tempted!!...no the real reason for going was its’ 80’s cheese night; celebrating Christmas with glitter and fake snow was a bonus!

Christmas morning brought many hangovers, many missed breakfasts, lots of present unwrapping (most which had been brought from home!) and one unfortunate shaved head!...that’ll teach Rich to drink near Michael’s clippers...! I did manage to get up in time for carols in the lobby, as our MD Carlton had insisted the British contingent do something for the hotel guests in the Xmas spirit! We then had lunch provider by our promoter, ‘The Star’, where there did have a roast turkey, but lots of traditional curries and satay sticks! Santa came to visit, we did one of Carlton’s famous, if not mind numbing, quizzes, then on for a quick dip in the pool before the bus to work! Shame we had to work through ‘til the 29th, otherwise we might have mistaken it for a real Christmas!!

After Xmas, the next day off we heading south this time to Melaka, wandered around the bustling china town, had a great lunch of traditional rice balls and chicken and a walk around the lovely church on the hill, then took a ride in the local trishaws!! Then we drove all the way back up past KL to Selangor, to the Firefly Resort. We went out on electric motor bots for half an hour, and as you purr along the mangroves, certain types of trees are home to hundreds of fireflies, which light them up like Christmas trees!! Its absolutely amazing and i'd recommend it to anyone...the guide caught one and they're only the size of a grain of rice at their biggest, but the effect when they're all in the trees is amazing! We stayed overnight, which looked very nice, until rachel realsised she was sharing with a cockroach!!...we slept all night with the light on, and we didnt see it again!!

Next day we headed down to a local park, where the river runs down from the hills, with the most amazing waterfalls! If you make the effort to go all the way up to the highest pool, you're so sweaty that you welcome the cool dip in the water!!...the compact camera nearly took a dip too, but the pics are worth it!We then headed to FRIM, the forest research institute malaysia....a park butwith a canopy walkway...i thought there would be more evidence of research, but it looks more like its been built for the tourists!! but great views!!
