We did exactly what it says on the tin...escaped to Tallinn! Not that Helsinki is so terribly awful, but as we played here last year, there isn't so much that we haven't already done! The super sea cat takes 100minutes, for a bargainous price of 28Euros (£22ish) we went over at 10.30am and came back on the 7.30pm! We spent the day wandering the old town, with its' beautiful medieval buildings, churches, spires and brightly coloured walls. The view from the top of the first church spire was great, we could see right over the old town, with the Russian Orthodox Cathedral up on the old town rock, the sections of old town wall running along the edge and the various spires protruding over the roof tops, including that of the Town Hall. Luck was with us as the sun came out! So we sat in a lovely courtyard cafe with cake and mulled wine!...they do cakes and pastries very well here!
After admiring many buildings, including the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, we browsed a 'we sell anything communist' shop, disguised as an antics shop! It had all the usual; army jackets and hats, cigarette cases, lighters, badges, rifles and what every communist needs, a Stalin alarm clock! We carried on around to the town hall square and found a traditional medieval place...it had a shop selling smocks, pointy toed felt shoes and spices, and a restaurant/bar selling wild boar, elk and flagons of ale!...but not potatoes, as they hadn't been discovered yet according to our waitress! After a great afternoon sitting in the sun, we were only disturbed by the passing Harre Krishna's (3 times!!) and the bicycle made for 7! The first one we saw had a group of merry, possible 'stag-doers', as on the way back up hill they had picked up some passengers and arms and legs were flailing! The Asian tourists looked to have more decorum, and they even had a smile and a wave!
We had a quick turn around the knit market...notice the spelling, no fleas in sight!..which had some nice things, but lots of big bold patterns and even some hats which are so long to the point they double as a scarf! We only had the time, and money left, to stop off at the chocolate cafe for a couple of take away truffle chocolates...these had Vana Tallinn liqueur in...so like a rum truffle but heavenly! Then as the sun was starting to set, we headed back to the ferry terminal for a bit of cribbage on deck before a surprisingly early night after an exhausting day. Brilliant!
