back in the sun

and loving it.

So the plane touched down and we were in Australia, I had a bit of trouble getting through immigration as my passport looks a bit tatty. I was spoken to by one of the people and soon sent out into the great heat (wooo!!!) of Brisbane.

We caught a shuttle bus to the hostel and soon checked in and dumped our bags. We went for a wander and found Chinatown which is just one street but done up really nice with pagodas everywhere. We grabbed some lunch in one of the many Chinese eateries and then had a wander around the rest of the block. There are a few hostels and pubs, the main night clubs and lots of strip joints. I saw my first aborigine who was sitting on the pavement and probably drunk. We checked the cost of flights for different ways of getting Ayres Rock and then went to the hostel bar Birdee Num Num’s for a fine $8 jug of beer and Mia had the same but with horrible cider. We met some girls who had been travelling around the country and some Irish guys who had been in a motor bike crash and had broken bits. Then it was off to bed, which I thought was good as I thought it was really late but no it was early and we had just been awake for 19 hours.

After waking up early, and not remembering the names of anyone from last night, we asked how to get into town and the German girl on the desk was really helpful and pointed out a lot of things we could do. So we headed down the road and caught the City Cat, a bus on the river, and jumped off at South Bank Riverside. This a really smart area of bush, cafes, a few shops, a man made beach with sand sculptures. We grabbed some lunch and watched the Ibis birds wander around after peoples food. They really big birds with long black beaks.

Then it was a short walk past the university over Victoria Bridge into the city centre where loads of people were bustling about in between all the sculptures and buskers. We went into a few shops and I got a diving magazine. Then it was back on the City Cat, we stayed on the boat and went up and down the river looking at all the posh houses and house people with lots of money and no taste had built. There was a mansion, and this thing was huge, painted bright pink with white columns!! Even the out houses were bright pink. Ewwwwwww!!!!!

Then it was off the boat and a long walk back to the hostel, I had caught the sun and still had a hangover so it wasn’t that great for me. Then it was off into Chinatown for tea, we found this really nice Thai place that was pretty cheap. Sweet.

The next morning we were up bright and early and booked a tour of the Northern Territory which looks like it will be awesome. We will get to see Darwin and then a few other things on the ay down to Ayres Rock. Uber.

Then we sorted out the campervan which we will be picking up tomorrow when we fly to Sydney. I wanted to catch a whale there but supposedly that isn’t a real way of getting there.

Then it was back to town to see if we could make it to the Koala Sanctuary as the lady at the help desk took ages. Unfortunately there wasn’t much point in trying to get there in the time we had left so we wandered back to the hostel and kicked back before having tea. We packed our bags and are ready to hit Sydney tomorrow.
