Day 1
After a quick pack and a quicker breakfast we were on our way to the airport to jump on our flight to Wellington. It was a three hour flight and had the pursuit of happiness. After landing Maria declared her wooden statue and the lady at the customs desk sounded like she had the same story a lot.
Then we jumped in the shuttle bus to the hostel, Wellywood, which is painted like a giant zebra. It was in the centre of town near to everything. We had a wander around and soon found the cinema but had just missed the showing of wild hogs.
We
then found a place called the Wild Hog Café which had a sign saying 4 out of 4
pigs say eat more beef. Ha ha. It was our first meal for weeks where we could
actually choose what we wanted, wooo!!!!!! Then the waitress came over and we were
waiting for our first taste of a happy looking Kiwi...but no she was from the
valleys of the deepest darkest part of Wales...typical...a theme that would run and
run.
Then it was off into the cinema to watch the 300 which was really good, bloody and violent...my kind of film. Then we wandered about in Courtney place before heading back to the hostel.
Day 2.
Up early today for a long walk along the harbour front. We came across the civic centre which had loads of sculptures in it including a giant ball made from silver ferns. There are loads of things along the front for people off all ages, it has been really well designed. One of the best bits of the day, apart from finding all the random paintings on the walls was the giant ice cream I had which was a 99 covered in hard chocolate with chocolate buttons...mmmmmmmm!!!!! Then my tooth started to ache. Then we saw hot fuzz which was also...alright.
Day 3
Today was a mission and a half trying to find a dentist which was open or had space. We were told by the staff at the hostel to go to the hospital but it turns out you need a community card to use it so off we went round the streets of New Town looking for an appointment. Finally there was a space for tomorrow so I took it and just had to put up with the pain for another day. We grabbed a sandwich from a shop in an arcade and it was huge and I don't mean really big this thing could break your foot if you dropped it, and all for 1.66. We spent the rest of the day wandering, getting our bbh cards, checking out what was on at the cinema and looking at the internet. I got an early night as I thought I could sleep through the pain.
Day 4
Slept late today and then went to the Te Papa museum which is massive, the biggest in new Zealand. It looks like a piece of art itself and is surrounded by ducks!!! THEY'RE TAKING OVER THE WORLD!!!! We only did two floors looking at the info on volcanoes, earthquakes, animals and the original inhabitants. I didn't really take much in as I was more concerned about my appointment with the dentist. And so it came to pass that I must travel to the dentist. When I got there I had to fill in the usual info stuff but I soon got the call. Te dentist told me it was my wisdom tooth causing all the pain so he put loads on anaesthetic in my gum and pushed some into my tooth...it tasted disgusting, I didn't swallow it but I could still taste it. The dentist put the chair back and I had my eyes shut as I didn't want to see all the equipment he was sticking in my mouth. I did open them for a brief moment only to see there was a picture of BLOODY ORLANDO BLOOM!!! on the ceiling. Grrrrrrr. I also had a mouth piece to keep my jaw open. Then I needed another pint of anaesthetic as the other lot had worn off, and after 50 minutes of pulling and other patients getting irritated my tooth popped out. Afterwards I was told I couldn't eat anything for a few hours and nothing hot, so after walking about for a few hours with a really strange feeling of numbness I treated myself to a Wendy's cookies and cream thick shake...oh yea.
Day 5
Walked around, I bought some postcards.
Day 6
We walked into town today and went on the cable car. They are quite posh and don't smell nice like the ones in San Francisco. At the op of the hill were great views of the city which were snapped up by yours truly. There was a cable car museum which is a great way to find out about he history of the cars. They also have an original car made of wood. We then walked along the path to the planetarium, the guy on the desk used to be in the royal engineers in the army and did the survey of Guernsey in 1972...he was a bit odd. Once inside there was a really cool looking old telescope which we were allowed to use to look at the sun. Now I was a bit sceptical about this as I didn't fancy going blind but I was assured there were lots of filters on the viewing piece to make sure that wouldn't happen. It was very cool. Then it was a slow walk down the hill through the botanical gardens back into the city. I prefer the gardens in Christchurch as there is a motor way that cuts through this one, although it does have a nice rose garden. The walk took us down by the parliament building that looks like a beehive, and on one of the lamp posts nearby was a sign up for a missing hat...that's right HAT. Ha ha ha ha ha ha, made me laugh. That night we watched The Shooter.
Day 7
Found a really cool shop today illicit clothing. Walked around Cuba street and nearby places
Day 8
Up the earliest I had been since arriving in New Zealand as we went to the Armageddon Expo, or geek convention as Maria called it. We got there about 9am and had to queue with all the people in fancy dress and bickering super geeks. There were some kids in front of us that Maria told about blowing up seagulls. Then batman came out and entertained the crowd for a while. Then after 45 minutes we got into the building where we were accosted by two storm troopers who everyone was taking photos of and a girl dressed as a Jedi who everyone was ignoring. Then we had a look around the collectables stalls and the comic books, cool toys and ray guns from Weta Studios. There was a group doing full effect make up and there were loads of kids who looked like they had been hacked by various weapons. I was hungry so we got some chips and a kid ran through announcing that the wrestling would be starting in 5 minutes, so we went down to the squared circle and watched some awesome crap wrestling. Then came the reason why I was there in the first place, I got to meet and have my photo taken with John Rhys Davies aka Gimli the dwarf aka that guy who goes "Indie" and Billy Dee Williams aka Lando Calrissian. When I had my photo taken with Lando I accidentally touched his bum, when I said thank you he said the pleasure was all his....right. Then it was off to an Irish bar that didn't sell Guinness!!! Then it was back to the expo to meet the stars again. Four guys turned up in teletubby costumes and jumped on a storm trooper. Then at the end we went back to the hostel and made tea and I stayed up and watched the football at 1-4am.
Day 9
Went into town today, found an Irish bar that did sell Guinness. Watched some artists performing their thing in Cuba street. We watched a movie called black sheep which was reminiscent of Peter Jackson's first movies but a bit less gory.
Day 10
Just chilled, went to the museum and potted around.
Day 11
Packed, went to the airport, waited for our delayed plane
