Back to Mama's

Text written in: English

Day 1

I woke up feeling better and spent the morning in the pool chatting with Geoff and two girls, one of which had forgotten to take her luggage off the boat so was waiting for it to turn up. She had also left her sun cream in her bag and went sun bathing anyway. She had really really really very bad sunburn. We also met a Dutch guy who had been in the Solomon Islands when it was hit by the tsunami. He had only moved from the area  that was hit a few days before.

Then it was our turn to leave so we jumped on the boat to Denaru Harbour. It didn't take long to get in to the harbour and when we pulled up to the wharf there was a big yacht called Elvis on Tour with a big picture of the king on the side.

We got a taxi to Mama's Tropic of Capricorn, for 15 FD,  and were greeted by Mary giving us a big hug. We told her all about our trip and within 5 minutes of finishing we were in a taxi on the way to the doctors. When we got there the driver came in with us and waited until we went into see the doctor after only 5 minutes. When he (the doctor) walked into the room he had a huge fro, gold chain and was just putting his coat on over his Hawaiian shirt. The only thing I could think of was were going to be treated by Shaft!!!

So Shaft gave us some anti biotics and we were sent away. The taxi driver was outside and he drove us to the chemist to get the medicine and then back to Mama's. Now when your in Fiji you have to arrange a price before you get in a taxi, unfortunately we hadn't done this and given that the cab from the harbour was 15 FD we asked for the damage. The driver looked at us and said "is 12 FD ok?" We found this quite funny and said sure, he then came in and had a cup of tea with us. For the rest of the day we just chilled by the pool and chatted with the other guests.

Day 2

Today was a chill out day, I called home and James and got all the news about family stuff. I then spent the whole day by or in the pool. I ended up talking mostly to Alex from Sweden, Tza (Paul) from New Zealand, and the rest of the guys, actually we I met a really nice couple from Slough, Ben and Kelly. We spent most of the day talking about geography as Alex was horrified that in Guernsey we mostly learn about weather patterns ad rock erosion that where places are and capital cities. So we went through most of Europe naming countries, locations and capital cities. Then he was further shocked when I said I probably knew more states in the USA than I did countries in Europe. So I wrote them all down on a serviette. The biggest problem of the day was other people deciding if there were 50 or 52 states in America.

Day 3

We got a lift to the airport today with Mama's boyfriend and he was explaining that she was in Australia for a month. Then we changed our flights as we had seen enough of fji for the while. On the way out of the airport a guy came up to us asking questions and trying to sell us a tour so Maria saw fit to put him in his place, I kept my mouth shut and carried on walking.

After booking accomodation in Wellington, which we had managed to get a direct flight to we walked back to the hostel and saw Alex and Tza (Paul) sitting at the table looking glum. I asked them if they had had a good day and they both laughed. It turned out that they had both been ripped off and joined the club of everyone else. They had been conned into buying balsa wood sword for 20 FD each, Mary told us they were worth 2.50 FD, then they had bought some food and it had cost them 5 FD for two sachets of tomato ketchup, then they went to jump in a mini van and Tza (Paul) negotiated a price of 15 FD for the trip back to the end of the road that the hostel was down. This I thought was the funniest as the mini vans usually cost 50 cents and the fact that after they paid 15 FD up front the guy carried on and picked up others only charging them 50 cents only makes it better. This obviously pleased Maria who had also been ripped off during the trip.  Being ripped off turned into the conversation for the whole night and after a few beers the jokes started to flow. Then to top it all off Tza (Paul) left his Gin outside and it got nicked.

Day 4

Spent the mornig swimming and playing Frisbee, talking to new arrival James and Tza (Paul). Then I went next door to check out the prices of these really cool silk painting that they have which turned out to be mega pricey so I gave them a miss. I spent the afternoon asleep, then got up for tea. It was a great night of sillyness. James (England) did most of the talking. He is very much Andy (lifejacket) in his humour and managed to offend every colour, race, religion, nationality and disability. I particularly liked his fat Nazi Dutch friend who hated fat people. There was also two new Swedes (everybody is from Sweden!!!) a girls who had black hair who said she was naturally blond, I believed her but I just couldn't picture it. The other was a guy who seemed to have caught James' eye. He also told us a great stoey of how they were travelling with a con man for three months. Nutter.
