After a pitstop & a night in bed in Auckland we head for the Coromandel peninsula. It can be quite hair-raising driving intheis country, as much of the interior is high ground so you have to cross this & the only way by road is on small, extremely windy, long roads. The weather was not great on the western side of Coromandel so we head up towards Cathedral cove & a campsite in Hahei with very friendly birdlife.
We took a hike over to Cathedral Cove which was beautiful, 2 sandy beaches which are joined by a huge rock with a hole in the middle that you walk through.
Also nearby is Hot Water Beach. It's just that - a beach with hot water on/in it. To utilise this geothermic wonder, a shovel, some sensitive feet & determination is what you need. Dan being naturally obsessive was rather good at the digging of our hole in which you lie in until you nearly boil! We kept having to jump up & run down to the sea for a dip.
