Don’t panic don’t panic! We did not see any protesters/ “bombs”/ clashes of any kind apart from the occasional near miss with a “tuk tuk “

So as far as we are concerned Bangkok is still a very safe place to go on your holidays.

Who we did see though was Daragh and Emer two of our friends from Monaghan who have just started their round the worlder, and we was so pleased to see a familiar face we hung around with each other for a few days before we all had to get a move on. We went around Khao san on the Saturday night and got a little tipsy and spent till 3 in the morning reminiscing and wondering when Mc Clave will become Taoiseach (Keith’s spelling). On the Sunday we went around the market that’s way bigger than anything I’ve ever seen and has a huge (sometimes endangered) pet section. I convinced a few of the stall holders to let me hold various animals along with a tiny baby marmoset. After that we went out for more drinks/food/reminiscing and said our fond farewells.

Another thing Bangkok does particularly well is Thunder storms. We had made our merry way to the palace (only to be told it was closed) when the mother of all thunder storms decided to let rip right on top of us, one thing about Buddhist temples they like to have lots of gold spires so we was in a giant lightening factory. We huddled together with a few other tourists under the archway hoping it would clear but when that didn’t happen we decided to risk it. We being from countries well famed around the world for wetness were not afraid of a little monsoon. So we ventured out into the stinging wetness that is Bangkok’s wet season, making squelchy noises as we went. The locals and taxi drivers alike would wonder at the silly rain drenched tourists wandering around whilst the clouds around us let rip with huge bomb blasts of sound and terrifying screeches of lightening. But as the roars became rumbles and the lightening mere flickers we marveled at how great a day we had had despite seeing nothing of noted interest and spending not one bhat. We had enjoyed the cell that was our home and the silly touristy Bangkok that was so familiar but strange at the same time and we will be back that’s for sure, political tension or no political tension.
