train madness

Text written in: English

with along goodbye from our island paradise we set off on a boat + taxi + train for thailand.

the train had the faint whiff of durian and was packed with more produce than people. the train men entrusted with the care of the produce were more worried about the time it took for it to get there than the state it was in and was happily opening packets of "lucky dips" in search of treasure.

halfway through the train journey they started to move all the lucky dips, flour, sugar and oil to the otherside of the train. we was lost as to the purpose of this apart from to put the train on an unnerving tilt. as we pulled into the station all was explained as the train men started throwing everything out the windows not bothered if someone was catching it on the otherside.

it took them around 2 mins to move the whole lot and that was just in our cabin.

all through the trip there was a intimidating but stylish railway police presence wearing tailored clothes berets and boyscout scarves, brandishing a mixture of AK's, grenade lauchers and handguns. surely thai local transport has to be the most amusing in the world.
