jungle is not so massive

Text written in: English

it was very different going to a jungle that is quite obviously under threat, whereas the amazon was huge our little patch of rainforset on the river was dawrfed by the palm oil plantations that surrounded it. this is extreamly unfortunate for the animals that live there but good for us animal spotters because they didnt have anywhere to hide.

as we was going by boat to camp we spotted loads of porboscis monkeys playing amongst the branches of the trees and stopped a few times to take pictures, but our guide was in a hurry to show us something so we kept pressing on.

it turned out he was taking us to see the elusive pygmy elephants that were coming to this area to graze an they had appeared on the river just as our boat turned up, they were so small and beautiful but we didnt see thm for long beause we had to get back. our guide assured us they would be hanging around for a few more days yet before they make there way back. you see their trail is cut off by palm oil plantations and every year they have to turn back because they cant pass them without being hounded by the farmers with guns.

we got to our (definatly not) 5* hotel and had dinner then went out for a night river boat trip wher we was lucky to see amongst other things a flat headed cat and some very sleepy kingfishers.

the next day we was full of excitement because we had been told we was going on "elephant safari" into the jungle to have a good look at them, so we hopped on our boats and rushed off, when we got to the place he had last seen them, we first thought they was not there then **PURRRP** we heard one of them trumpeting behind a bush. we all got off the boats and keith being very intrepid decided he was going to get an action shot! well we all got a bit of a fright because altho we had been told the young males like to "play" with tourists we didnt expect him to charge at everyone so i jumped in the boat and watched keith still taking pictures like a proper tourist not worried in the slightest.

after this eventfulness we decided we would go around the back to get a look at them walking away and we was so glad we did, with the herd was two small calfs one was as big as a new born baby african one and the other was as small as a dog, no joke it was tiny! this was one of those moments when your grateful for every insect bite and hot sticky second because you get to see something truly unique.

after this we all decided to get drunk lol the beer was on our guide and we decided that it was too wet to do any other trekking.

all in all a VERY good trip.
