monkeying about

we arrived at La Senda Verde greeted by a hyperactive spider monkey and a dodgy looking capuchin, we asked to stay and volunteer and we havnt left in two weeks ( we are on our weekend off in La Paz).

ive never been so close to big monkeys in my life and its a real treat to be able to look after them every day. Vicky and Marcello own the place and also become mum and dad to the baby monkeys two of them sleeping with them at night. we are the first volunteers they have here and they are listening to what we need so the program can be improved for future volunteers.

all the local people that work their have a special connection with the animals, one of the capuchins will try to bite us every morning but will be as soppy as a puppy with the locals, the same capuchin escaped last  monday and savaged a poor pup that happend to get in the way ( i had to sew up his ear because we couldnt get a vet out for a few days).

my favorite monkey is called banana and shes a tiny bolivian red howler that i get to look after daily when vicky goes to her meetings, noone else really likes her because she moans alot but i think shes adorable, keiths left me for a capuchin called danny, whenever he can he's their messing about , danny is the most intelligent one and will search your pockets regardless of zips to see if theres anything he can steal.

they also have blue and red macaws and loads of green parrots, all of the animals were either pets or were going to become pets one day, they recently saved a ocelot (small big cat) from being sold to brazillian traders.

so thats a short summary we are going to stay another 2 weeks and then onto the jungle again. weve been building some enclosures too but after the tortoise escaped from his -and is still yet to be found- weve been extra careful to make them perfect.

oh they also have a coati here and 2 pekkery and loads of cats and dogs.
