hola
Our first stop into bolivia lands us on the famous Cocacobana beach.....not quite as big or warm or exciting as the one in Rio but on the shores of lake Titicaca a cool 3,800 meters above see level. its so bloody high the snow peak mountains in the distance look like there only a wee bit higher. Nice enough place, bolivia has a bit of a litter problem though but it is cheap as chips. 4 euro a night in the hostel and 80 cent a beer. also found salt and vinegar crisps in it, a nice change from the local flavours but still no cheese and onion on the horizon, disappointing. didnt spend too long on the mainland, next morning we staring the hike over to a different port to catch a boat to isla del sol (sun island). dispite being so high it does really have a meditereanean feel to the place and the sun will burn you quickly so we both have bogman tans now. found a man who was willing to row us out to the island, took two hours cause i think our helping him row slowed us down.
reached the island anyway. seen a wee ruin then headed up to look for food and hostel. 1.50 for a hostel, cheers then into some womens house for dinner. dinner was complete with entertainment, some little boy spouting on to us in spanish or iwari couldnt understand him any how but he did sing a few songs in exchange for a lollipop. soon other kids seen our genorosity so we had to pick up supplies in the shop, sweets for every kid on the island. dinner was grand, chicken and chips.....the potatoes are lovely over here, loads of different kinds from purple to pure white. however they cant manage decent mash so they fry everything. it got cold that night, very cold....all our layers are being used at last.
next morning we started our hike around the island, not too many hills this time thank god but at this height you get out of breath lighting a fag...which dosent help either. found a beach on the other end of the island and decided to sleep there. not much to do there really so we walk round the village admiring the livestock, sheep, cows, pigs and of coarse guinea pigs...tasty. got really cold that evening but we still sat on the shore front drinking beer and watching the locals unload the island supplies. most of it was around fifty crates of beer, whether they were for the locals or visiting irish men i was unsure but the wee girls hefted the crates on the backs and ran back and forth from the store. the men of coarse drank a beer while they watched.
next morning we went to look at some ruins, they all look the same after a while i think but still kinda cool then we started the trek back to the dock for our boat back. uneventful really but some weird chickens tried to nab our crisp sandwiches. the boat back with its engine was nearly a slow as our row boat some how but back on the mainland we tucked into a curry and chips and watched the sun set....aahhhhhh. also on the way back we were treated to a peek at the bolivian navy, it seemed funny that the only boats about were shaped as swans and pelicans but hey perhaps they are james bond boats.
next stop La Paz...
oh its so cheap over here
adios Keith and Kim
