Picked up rental car in Auckland; a ghetto corolla with 182,000 kms on it! Nicknamed it the 'Pukeko' after a native NZ bird that is "reluctant to fly". Drove through Coromandel peninsula to Hahei beach. Crazy windy roads up and around mountains next to the coast. Looks a lot like Cornwall/Ireland/Scotland at times; rolling hills of farmland next to the sea. Spent the night at the beach but woke up to drizzle. Spent the morning at Hot Water Beach--fantastic hot springs bubble up under foot, right on the beach! Visited Tauranga on Bay of Plenty but carried on inland to avoid the rain.
