Joe, Simon, me and tom moved on to bangkok on the overnight boat and bus combo, getting in at 5am. Funniest things about the trip - simon leaving his bag on the bus and having to run after it down the road, and most importantly, while we were at a crappy cockroach infested service area at 1am, simon should have been getting on his plane home - but got the wrong dates!! During the day we got checked in for a couple more hours kip then headed out to the sunday market which was a HUGE indoor market to the north of bangkok. Muchos purchases at ridiculous prices did ensue, particularly for joe who had to actually buy a bag in which to take all the presents home! We chilled out for most of the rest of the day, with simon heading off to the airport to try to get a standby ticket home 1 day late. (which he managed). The three of us that were left chilled in the evening then the next day checked out at 12 to move me and tom to a really swanky hotel right on siam square - courtesy of my mum (paying for 1 last night in luxury). we stayed at the novotel right in the centre of bangkok - easily 4 star, maybe 5! joe was staying in a place on ko sahm road which is where all the backpacker places are. his was pretty lush at 500baht a night (about 8 quid) but our was 4200baht (inc 1000baht breakfast) for the 2 of us. that about 60quid!! a far cry from sharing 2 double beds between 4 lads for 200baht each in koh tao!!! on our last full day we went and saw the standing buddah, very impressive and gold, and checked out a bit more shopping at the MBK shopping centre near siam square - where i picked up some cheap knock-off diesel jeans for £12 a pair - and you'd never know the difference! On the final day after our lush hotel night, we went to see the reclining buddah, absolutely massive gold buddah lying down in a building, which was pretty cool. Then we headed off to the airport very early so that joe could sit on the standby list for getting home that night, rather than 2 nights later which is what his ticket was for. Can't blame him, we just wanted to be out of bangkok and were ready to head home!
Memorable things from bangkok -
- the tuk tuk's are mental! 3 wheeler taxis, some of which just nip in and out of the traffic racing others (if you encourage them to). We even got one popping up onto it's back wheels doing a wheelie for us! awesome!
- joe and his bluntness with people. In the market when some woman told him the price of something, he said "fuck a duck!" which got the desired reaction. And secondly when coming out of his hotel and being asked for the 10th time by the same guy whether he wanted a suit "jesus christ lads, leave it the fuck out!"
