January 26 is India's Republic Day. A day most notable for the
massive parade in New Delhi followed with an air show. Of course
you can guess that we were scheduled to board during the parade, and
our flight was scheduled to take off just before the airshow.
Well if there's one thing that is late in India, it seems to be our plane.
Since it was delayed, we had to wait for the airshow to end
before takeoff, which in total with the other delays ended with close
to 3 hours of delay. This was unfortunate because we had a lot of
family visiting planned in Mumbai.
Mumbai is a massive city (15 million), and was covered with a dense
feeling of humidity and smog when we landed. It must have been
about 30 degrees outside and night was somewhere near 20. We
travelled across most of the city to our destination of India Gate
(built solely to welcome the Queen of England some time ago). The
city is layed just beside the ocean but the entire way you could hardly
see anything in the ocean due to the visibility from the smog.
Despite the size of the city, Mumbai seems to have many small
communities. On the flyovers (bridges that travel above other
roads 4 stories up), we could look down and see numerous different
events going on from weddings to religious teachings, to cricket and
just general gatherings. Both New Delhi and Mumbai have a LOT of
greenery, which is very nice, but it seems that Mumbai has much larger
trees throughout all of the city... the trees bring a beauty to the
city.
One more difference here is the people seem much more trendy to Western
and European styles. Mumbai had hundreds of brand name stores you
would never see in Edmonton.
Mumbai was a great one-day stopover for us - we didn't see much of the city but did do a lot of visiting.
