This is a Jungle town stocked full of Gringos doing Jungle and Pamapas (swamp) trips. WE booked ourselves a 3 day Pamapas trrip and a 2 day Jungle trip. On the advice of the tour guide we went and bought ourselves some second hand white shirts. Supposed to protect from Mosquito bites and to ward off the sun. Not many trees in the swamps. I was a bit dubious at first about the whole white shirt thing. Especially when we were heading off on the trrip and it looked like Grafton street at lunch time during the summer, white shirts everywhere. All that was missing was the Ties. But as it turned out, the shirts were perfect, I got bitten everywhere else except under the shirt.
The Pamapas trip was excelent, we boated everywhere, except for the day we went hunting Anaconda. And even that day we caught an Anaconda very early on so there wasnt too much walking involved, my kind of traveling. The snake catching was pretty cool. You had to wade out into the swamp, water and much upto your shins. If you saw a snake you were to call the guide over so he could catch it. Not seeing one was more on my mind though, and luckily on of the others found and caught one. Other then snakes there were tons of Crocs, Dolphins, birds and Mossies all over the place. When we got back from the pampas trip we cleaned up and went straight for the main bar in Rurre, The Mosquito. Here we downedd cocktails with exotic fruits and tried not to scratch our mozzie bites.
The next trip we took was a 2 day Jungle tour. This didnt amount to more then camping in a clearing in the Jungle and treking around the camp site for 2 days. The best part though was the second (and thankfully last) day of the trrip when the heavens opened and the water poured down. The Jungle looked more like a swamp and we were completly sodden. When we started our 3 hour treck in the morning the rain was pouring but the trails were still trails. After 2 hours the trails became rivers and the rivers became seas. We were hopelesly soakedd so that when we had to swing accross a river using a vine (I kid you not, every boys Tarzan dream come true) we didnt mind too much if we fell in. I made it :-) but Lor got about half way accross and decided holding on was too much and plumeteed straight in the water and slap into the bank. She was fine, I was laughing so much that I wasnt much help in draging her up the side of the bank. Absolutly brilliant time had by both of us.
