Home-Sweet-Home

Text written in: English

End of the road.

How time fly’s when you’re having fun, experiencing new experiences and meeting new and interesting people. It’s been a trip of a lot of contrasts, from rich to poor, developed to undeveloped, mountains to grassy plains and jungles to islands and oceans. It’s been a good year, but now the money has run out and its time to start working, pay back this year and save up for the next trip, South America in a few years I think.

Some of the best bits must have been, The Bacon Butty I had in Lhasa, the only one in fact, getting to the top of the Throng La Pass on the Annapurna Circuit Trek, seeing Everest, seeing the Potala Palace in Lhasa and driving through the Tibetan Plateau, Diving with Sharks and Turtles in Sipidan, Borneo, Kayaking in Nepal and Thailand, some of the bad bits, swimming on endless rivers in Nepal, having my phone pick pocketed in Cambodia, but that must be about it, the rest was just travelling. I saw this poster in a hostel in George Town, and I think that it sums up this year just fine.

Prayer for Tourists

‘Heavenly Father, look down on us your humble, obedient tourist servants, who are doomed to travel this earth, taking photographs, mailing postcards, buying souvenirs and walking around in drip-dry underwear.’ ‘Give us this day divine guidance in the selection of our hotels, that we may find our reservations honoured, our rooms made up and hot water running room the faucets.’ ‘We pray that the telephones work, and the operators can speak our tongue.’ ‘Lead us, Dear Lord, to good, inexpensive restaurants where the food is superb, the waiters friendly and the wine included in the price. Give us the wisdom to tip correctly in currencies we do not understand. Forgive us for under tipping out of ignorance and over tipping out of fear.’ ‘May the locals love us for what we are and not for what we can contribute to their worldly goods.’ ‘Grant us the strength to visit the museums and the parks, the government buildings and all the ‘musts’ in the guidebooks.’ ‘And if perchance we skip a historic monument to grab a sleep after lunch, have mercy on us for our flesh is weak.’

FOR HUSBANDS ONLY

‘Dear God, keep our wives from shopping sprees and protect them from ‘bargains’ they don’t need or can’t afford. Lead them not into temptation for they know not what they do!’

FOR WIVES ONLY

‘Almighty Farther, keep our husbands from looking at foreign women and comparing them to us. Save them from making fools of them selves in cafes and nightclubs. Above all do not forgive them for their trespasses for they know exactly what they do.’
