Another provincial town, and another failed architect in the planning dept. This town had even less of a town center than Pakse did. The town was twice the size as well, 120,00, yet to look at the place at night you wouldn't have thought so. It was made up of derlict buildings and houses, plus, alot of building works for new casinos and hotels, I guess this is to cater for the Thais across the river now that the new bridge as just been built as there isn't enough passing trade in the city to fill them. I watched the sun set over the Mekong and headed to a floating resturant. Yet another oddity in this town, there aren't the jobs here to support people eating at this kind resturant, it must be for the Thais across the river. I watched the local army paddling dragon boats up and down the river whilst eating my dinner of rice and pork, I didn't fancy the ants eggs, giant water bug or the crickets, the army boys were putting in a good perfomance, 2 teams racing each other up and down the river. It was an emprassive feat as the Mekong at this point was flowing very fast, and may be 2km wide. I left the next morning and headed north by 4 hours to a place called Tha Khaek.
