Surat Thani- Scarry Tuk Tuk Driver.

Text written in: English

The bus dropped us off at a cafe where we we separated into groups and taken by tuk-tuk to various places, to the islands or different cities. I was on the tuk-tuk that was headed to the bus station for Phucket. We were dropped off at 7am and not told anything. We eventually found somebody to ask when the bus would arrive and were told that our bus had been delayed, but we could pay 400Bht for a minibus. Eventually 6hrs after getting there they provided a mini-bus to take us he rest of the way, not a VIP coach that was promised. At this point another group of tourists arrived. We started talking to them, telling them what had been happening there, the story being changed all of the time and trying to be sold another bus ticket. When the head of the travel agency at the bus depot started saying that we were lying and to stop talking to the other passengers. Some heated words were exchanged and a tuk-tuk driver took it to heart a bit to much. You could see the red mist cloud his eyes. He lost it. He started growling, shouting and pouncing at us like a yapping dog would, making everybody jump and feel very on edge, threatened. This wasn't to bad but then he picked up a glass bottle and threatned to throw it at us, and then another a few minuets later, picked up another bottle and attempted the same thing.

Thankfully the door to the mini-bus was open and we were thorwing our bags on the roof as quickly as possible. As the last of the bags were being thrown on the roof and tied down, the tuk-tuk driver pulled a knife and started advancing towards us. It was only a small knife, but a knife is a knife. We jumped in the mini-bus as quick as we could and were gone.

I feel sorry for the rest of the people that had to wait for their bus, having just witnessed that and having to be near the mad tuk-tuk driver. I haven't heard anything on the travellers network of gossip, so I guess they must have been ok. Some of the people in my group had taken pictures and were going to report this to the tourist police, so I guess may be something may have happend to the man.
