Huay Xai Laos (boarder) to Chaing Kong (Thai boarder)- After a very infromal boarder crossing at both sides I found a tuk-tuk that took me to the bus station for buses headed to Chang Mai.
I got there just as the bus was pulling off and managed to stop it and get on. There was a ground hostess who served water and biscuits the same as in China. It was a short 6hr trip to Chang Mai where I was heading for some White Water I had heard about. The Mae Teang, grade4+ technical. I found some where to stay for the night and headed out early the next morning to see if I could join a trip. I got there just as they were opening and managed to join the trip that day. It was an hour and a half journery with the last half hour being on a very bumpy track. We stopped oftern to look at the rapids and watch the elephants walking along the banks. We made it to the top of the river for lunch and to meet up with the other paddlers. We got kitted up and started down the river. It was fast flowing and rocky with some exciting grade 4+ technical in the middle and some continuos grade 3 either side. There was plenty of wildlife on the river. Elephants on the bank and snakes in the trees. It was a good trip with no swims or rolls. The next day I headed south for Bangkok on the overnight bus and then the next bus to Phucket (pronounced poo-get) the next evening..............Thats when things went wrong!!!!!!!
