It was a fairly short flight into Kathmandu, and the stories are right, the plane decends very steeply into the valley, the steep valleys rising up either side. The airport and buildings are very rustic, its a poorer country than Vietnam but there alot more private cars about and the motos here are proper motobikes with big engines not little scooters. The streets here are really small and twisty. Big potholes every where and the air pollution is really bad. The food is really good out here tho, from Momo's ( Traditional Nepali food, like Raviolli but very strong spices), Nawari food, (Spiced noodles) and every western food you could think of. I have left off the Dhal Bat for the moment, as I will be having enough of that out in the village.
I am staying in the Thamel area of Kathmandu, full of hotels, resturants and tourist bars. It will be such a contrast to next week when im in a village of only a few thousand and the only western person about.
They know how to sing out here. The roof top terrace scene is huge, most resturants have live bands most nights of the week, singing modern and classic rock songs, as the streets are so small and jammed together the bands try to compete with each other and so it gets quite tunefull. I have eyed up a few rivers and trekks I want to do, Bhote Kosi and Sun Kosi and a 160m bungjy jump. I think more of the longer trekks and paddles will have to wait for my return trip.
