15 January
In the fiordland region of NZ. Stayed in a town called Te Anau. From here I went on a cruise in the Milford Sound. Milford is a fjord that runs into the Tasmin sea. Very beautiful scenary with large, near vertical granite rocks rising out of the water. I have many photos to show you all when I return. I think I will need to dedicate a whole evening on these photos alone! What was more remarkable was that I had very warm, sunny weather. Long may it last!
I planned to do some multi-day trekking here but could get on the treks I wanted to do so I moved on after a couple of days. On the more popular treks, the numbers that can start each day is restricted. Fine in principle, but the numbers allowed on each day are too small (10-40). If you want to get on some treks in the high season, you have to book many months in advance. Impossible to do when you are backpacking as I don't know where I'll be in a few days, let alone a few months. Personally I think, these treks are over-regulated and stop everyone apart from Kiwis from enjoying the treks. Little bit disappointed that NZ promotes its scenary then when you get here, you find crazy regulations stops you from enjoying it.
