Hello Again
Left Santa Rosalia, Mexico at 5.00pm on the night bus to Tijuana - quite an expensive trip at US$94 each. The bus was stopped several times by the police for lugggage searches. We had to unlock our suitcases for the searches but they didnt bother to search our backpacks. Bit of a joke really. We finally reached Tijuana bus terminal and caught another bus to the border, where we went through immigration and customs. Surprisingly we didnt have to get an exit stamp for Mexico and even more surprisingly we didnt get an entry stamp for USA. We just had to show our passport. With all the terrorist problems at present, we thought they would be exceptionally particular. Anyway, then we caught yet another bus into San Diego bus terminal and made our way to our hostel.
Our hostel was called Lucky D's and is a new one (or rather an old building being renovated). We had booked a double room for US$55 and it had a fridge, tv and wash basin, but we had to share the bathroom. Our room was a corner room with windows on 2 sides and was a really good room, except there was a fire station not far away and we had fire engines constantly roaring past with sirens blaring, all hours of the night. There is a lot of Irish staying in the hostel.
We did a lot of walking around in San Diego and felt very safe, but were warned not to walk in the area which was about 3 blocks from our hotel as a lot of homeless live there. We did find there were a lot of homeless and strange people walking around the city. Also lots of people in wheelchairs.
Went for a drink one night at Henry's Pub where they had a rock and roll night. The band was fantastic and played the music we love. There was a group of dancers from a swing club who had obviously taken lessons and were terrific dancers and swapped partners after every dance. We were itching to have a dance, but felt like amateurs. Not to worry, after a few gin and tonics (Pete had beer of cocurse), we were up and jiving with the best of them!!!! Great night.
Took the local transport (trolley train and bus )to Sea World and spent a day there. Saw several animal shows and enjoyed the day.
One night we walked down to the port and at fish and chips at a cheap restaurant right on the water. It was very pleasant sitting watching the boats.
On our last night there we ate at Hooters. There were 20 tv's in the restaurant, all covering the baseball game.
Because we had a fridge in our room, we went out to a supermarket on our first day and purchased food for breakfast and lunch. This is a great way to save money and we enjoy having what we like to eat. The hostel had a kitchen and so we could make our own tea and coffee as well, which is great. We often feel like a cup of tea at night, but cant make one ourselves unless the hostel has a kitchen.
San Diego is a very nice city. It is not a huge city and has a port and beaches. One thing we have noticed is how clean every thing is in comparison to South American and Mexico. There is no rubbish in the streets and the toilets are very clean. They even provide toilet paper!!! We no longer have to carry toilet paper everywhere we go.
After looking into how we are going to travel to the places we want to see, we have decided to book a Greyhound bus to Las Vegas. Lots of people have told us not to travel by Greyhound because of the strange people who use it, but unless we fly or hire a car, its the only way to go. So next blog will be from Las Vegas.
Bye for now,
Sam and Pete
