In complete contrast to the hectic city life of Nigeria we headed to the Afi mountain range in Nigeria. This is a huge area set aside to protect gorillas, drill monkeys and chimps. They built a canopy walk and are trying to raise more money to hire guards. A group of us guys took a hike to try and spot lowland gorillas. We spent three grueling hours climbing/ running up a mounatin in 100 percent humidity, getting eaten alive by all sorts of insects, scaling the mountain at a 50 degree angle, and clinging to spiky vines... it was a proper jungle trek. Once we reached the top our guide, in flip flops and not breaking a sweat, us wringing our shirts out... we did not see any animals... so the guide said thirty minutes rest, then we ran down the mountain with no stops. Nigeriaian guides are not as trained as they need to be, but it was a great hike! Laura in the meantime, went on a hike and a canopy walk, to a waterfall with a pool below, and she had a tour of the ranch to see the drill monkeys and chimps.
