So i have finally made it to the caribbean coast, The historic city of Cartagena!!
This city has quite some history...many pirate attacks, english, spanish, french and dutch fighting here back in the 17th 18th centuries. This resulting in the old (historic part) city being surrounded by a big wall, many defenses and a mighty castle!!
So i arrived in Cartagena after a total of 25 hrs travel time from nathan´s door to the hostel...i needed a sleep!! After did some walking around the historic part of the city...full of colonial spanish architecture, many colours and beautiful old balconied buildings...really nice place just to walk around!! Also checked out the modern art museum, which apart from the overly pretentious, andy warhol esque, feature artist it was really nice art gallery, with alot of good work by local and international artist influenced by the area.
The next day i took a trip out to the Islas de Rosario, a group of 27 islands about 1 hr boat ride from the city. Here i did two hour long snorkelling sessions, one on the beautiful coral reef full of tropical fish, coral of all sorts and crystal clear caribbean waters, the second was something else. It was a in a mangrove lagoon on the island, It was alot darker because of the shadows of the trees but swimming down amongst the tree roots covered in coral and the many baby fish and jellyfish was incredible, sort of out of worldly experience!! We came back through the dike created for shipping to the post, which was nice because it gave a really good insight into the flora and fuana of the area!
The rest of the time there was spent on the beach but there was also a very fun night out with the people from hostel where i danced freestyle imaginative salsa (very strange for the locals) with a canadian girl called emilee who knows my friend ruth from Sydney...small world...again!!
So am off further up the coast to Taganga
Til then chao
Dave
