Hiking in Salento
We left Medellin on Saturday morning. It took us 7h ride to do 200 miles! After being stopped by the police for a
chat we were stopped because of a motorcycle race.
It was funny to see the cyclists escorted by police officers in big motorbikes, holding big machine guns! They
seemed to be very happy to be photographed. The village of Salento is in the Zona cafetera. It is the best place
to visit a coffee farm.
The following day we took one of the trails and after an hour walk and went to visit one of the many farms
producing coffee. It seems that the best quality beans as for exportation only, so the coffee we drink everywhere
is only 2d grade.
On monday 11th we went into mud country! Salento is surrounded by various national parks and volcanoes. We
decided to spend the day hiking around the Cocora park. Have I mentioned yet that it's the "end" of the rain
season? We spent the day trekking in deep mud but the walk was worth it as we visited a hacienda where they
have many humming birds coming there for feed! We saw many of them but they are incredibly fast and
therefore very difficult to take a picture!
We came back to the hostal covered in mud and exhausted, planning an early night. Plans change quickly
around here! It was someone birthday and we ended up having a late night party, eating a big birthday cake
and drinking too much around a big fire!
