Arrival in Delhi

Text written in: English

Eight of us arrived in Delhi sometime during the night of June 22/23. Despite different arrival times, each of us was met either by Tenam Lama or a representative of the Kagyu Office who had hired a taxi and helped us negotiate the cultural experience waiting just outside the airport doors—throngs of people and cars and temperatures upwards of 35˚ Celsius/105˚ Fahrenheit. The forty-five minute drive to Manju-Ka-Tilla, the Tibetan refugee colony also referred to as "Tibetan Camp" in the northern part of the city, was an immediate and intense introduction to Delhi and its traffic. Tara Guesthouse, booked for us by Tenam Lama, was our destination. However, Manju-Ka-Tilla is a rabbit warren of narrow alleys passable only by rickshaw, so our taxis deposited us at the edge of the camp and we piled our luggage onto several rickshaws whose drivers led us the into the heart of Manju-Ka-Tilla. Tara Guesthouse is a brand-new hotel where Tenam-La had managed to book us air-conditioned rooms. The rooms were spacious and very clean. I noticed that despite the simplicity of all the hotel rooms we encountered during our time in India, they all had full crown moulding! We gratefully dropped into bed....
