Mendoza is the center of the wine producing region of Argentina. It is a quaint, small town laid out in the characteristic Argentinean grid pattern with all the streets named for famous and historical people and dates. The town is full of parks and fountains that actually have water running in them! The streets are tree-lined with the spring water from the mountains running through the deep ditches along every street. You had to be careful where you walked, since the sidewalks went right over these ditches. One false move and you would be several feet beneath the walk - kind of dangerous with all the wine being served in town!
I spent a lot of time walking through the town and sitting in their large San Martin Park. This park was so large that I took an hour bus tour just to see what it had to offer. The park was full of large trees, gorgeous fountains and statues, rose gardens, lagoons, and even a recreation center with pool.
I stayed at a wonderful little family-owned bed and breakfast that was about 10 blocks from the main square. It was called La Magdalena - named after Columbus'ship. I forgot that Columbus had a presence in South America as well. It was in a quiet residencial neighborhood, yet easily accessible to all the sites in Mendoza. I highly recommend it! The owners didn't speak any English, but they patiently and happily played charades with me. If there was something I really needed the details for, we went to the computer and use the Spanish/English translator! They were fantastic!
In the central part of Mendoza, you could find all kinds of restaurants and cafes with outside patios serving the incredible steaks and wine of the region. There also were MANY Italian restaurants. I don't quite understand why the Italians have had such an culinary influence on Argentina. Anyway, it was fun to stroll along reading the menus and after deciding on a place, sit, relax, be pampered by the waiters and watch the world go by!
