Out in the Country

Mansion del Fundador and El Molino:

Sandra and I ventured a little ways out of town to visit the Mansion del Fundador and El Molino.  The Mansion del Fundador was the house for the "mayor" of Arequipa in the 1800s.  It is a beautiful mansion with intricately carved doors, arched ceilings, imported furniture and its own chapel. It also has some paintings and carvings left from when the Chileans occupied Arequipa and took over the mansion.  The Chileans left their mark in several places!  Today, the mansion is used as a museum and for events such as weddings.  It overlooks the Chile River and a lush river valley, so it would make a beautiful setting for a wedding!

El Molino is "the mill".  It is an old mill that was built 350 years ago.  It also is situated in a gorgeous country setting.  It was nice to get out of town for a while and see some fertile ground!

Convent of San Francisco:

In Arequipa, there are several convents still operating.  One is the Convento of San Francisco.  The Convento is still the home to 5 Catholic priests.  It is open to the public during certain hours when the priests are not in prayer in the courtyard.  We did the tour of the grounds and the museum rooms.  Like many of the buildings in Arequipa, it's architecture is incredibly beautiful.  In addition, it has withstood several earthquakes.

Huachay Pueblo:

On another day, Sandra and I took the bus to a small town called Huachay, just outside of town.  It is a typical pueblo (small town) found around Arequipa.  It is very quiet with little activity since the cotton mill shut down.  It seemed almost like a ghost town, but was a nice reprieve from the noise and pollution of the city.
