It was very interesting to spend my birthday in Peru. Usually birthdays are celebrated with a big party starting at about 10:00 PM and ending at midnight. My day, though, was rather quiet and reserved. I spent most of the day in class.
First I had Origami class and made several figures - a bird, a rabbit, and a heart with wings. Origami requires a lot of patience, good eye sight and finger dexterity! I had to have a lot of help to get these figures to come out looking like they were supposed to. The teachers then gave me a dinosaur that they had created, a card and sang "Happy Birthday" in Spanish - very nice gesture!
I continued the day with a pan flute lesson and then my Teaching English as a Foreign Language class.
In the evening, Mark and his family presented me with a chocolate cake from the Ice Palace - best place in town for cakes!!! After they sang Happy Birthday, they have a Peruvian tradition of having the "birthday girl" take the first bite. Taking the first bite was literally the first bite without the use of any utinsels. Of course, part of the tradition is that they help you get "really into the cake". It was a fabulous cake! Wish you all could have had a bite!
