This evening, I got to experience a different side of Lima. Paola and I went to an opening for a new artist at an art gallery in an area known as Barranco. It is a really cool part of Lima along the ocean just south of Miraflores that is undergoing alot of renovation. It is filled with old, stately homes which are getting transformed into apartments, lofts, restaurants, bars, art galleries and art studios. It reminded me a lot of LODO in Denver! It is so funky and artsy.
We visited a couple of art galleries owned by some of Paola's friends. One was having an opening exhibition for a jewelry artist named Leily Li, so there were lots of people milling around with drinks and appetizers, talking with Leily.
These galleries are actually consignment places for local artists, so they were filled with native art objects from all over Peru including silver jewelry, sculpture, paintings, weaving, pottery, ceramics etc. I really fell in love with Barranco!
The next few days were spent in several fun social events with Paola and her friends. I am really getting an opportunity to experience life in Lima and getting a little culture along the way.
One of the events was another adventure to a bar in Barranco. The daughter of a friend of Paola's was going to do a demonstration of the Peruvian marinera dance at midnight. This is the romantic courtship dance done with handkerchiefs that kids learn and many times enter into competition. The dance and costume depends upon the region of the country - Piura, Trujillo or Lima. Piura is more a "farmer's" costume, whereas Trujillo is more dressed up and Lima being very formal and sexy. It is an incredible dance with the men imitating the steps of the Peruvian pace horse. See the following links for some more information.
