Some more information from Monique:
So after the ceremony we went back to our hotel - El Refugio- in Pucallpa. During the week we did an Ayawasca ceremony at Pedro's house which is 2 blocks away. We visited several restaurants and we have eaten several interesting things. We ate lots of fish, chicken, rice, yuca, bananas and other interesting fruit. We always had some type of fruit juice and tea. They also eat deer and a type of rodent (about the size of a pig). It is actually very tasty.
One of the fruits is called Guanbana. It is the size of a large Papaya and almost looks like one from the outside. Inside it has large black pits and white flesh. I cannot describe the taste except to say that it is very exotic and healthy. Full of vitamins. I could easily live of this fruit. I am very pleased to anounce that they grow in Bethania. Ronald bought one for all of us on a visit to Botanical gardens on the 23rd. We were shown several healing and edible plants. It was very nice. They also have a small zoo there with local monkeys, birds, snakes and animals. It was very interesting to see. The really sad part, though is the small cages that that the animals are kept in. Not cool at all!.
On Tuesday night we had a ceremony where we were presented with certificates to mark our participation in this historic event. They really pay attention to detail. It was very sweet.
We took some time off on Wednesday evening and shot some pool outside our rooms at the hotel with the guys. The girls brought the snacks and the guys the San Juan Cerveza (Beer). I (Monique) was the DJ so at least I thought the music was good. It was great fun and amazing to see the simple ease with which the shamans relax, have fun and crack jokes. They are great people.
Francesca and Jo left for Lima on Thursday and Gail went with Augustina to San Francisco on Friday.
