On my own

Text written in: English

Well, I left Pucullpa today and flew to Iquitos.  I am truly on my own now, without any of my new friends to accompany me.  But, I'll be meeting many more.

Scott Peeterson from the Refugio Altiplano was at the airport as planned when I landed.  It was nice to know someone would be there.  I decided to fly to Iquitos instead of taking that 6 day boat ride up the river.  I learned more about the ride and decided I would not be able to take 6 days of sitting, bad food, cramped conditions etc.  It would be nice to have a couple of day journey, but not 6 days.  Chances are it would be much longer than 6 days, too.  They usually have lots of mechanical problems etc. on those boats.

Iquitos is quite different from Pucallpa.  Seems to be a bit more cosmopolitan with a lot of ex-patriots wandering around.  They have a beautiful boulevard next to the river which was really hopping tonight.  Iquitos appears to be cleaner and not as much poverty and dirt.  However, there are LOTS of children begging - pretty aggressively, I must add.  We ate dinner outside on the walk way.

Two other girls are coming in from South Africa to go out to the Refugio with us tomorrow.  Should be good!  The people at the Refugio are really taking good care of us.
