Life in the Urban Jungle

Leaving on a Jet Plane-the first few pics are from Andrae's last days in Istanbul. I just had to include proof that he not only danced with other guys, but also enjoyed it. That night we learned some Turkish dancing that ventured out into the street (this didn't last long, once we began dodging cars). When he left early on a Monday, getting to the airport proved to be a problem since public transport ends around 1 am and he left at 6am. So I hung out with him at the airport,  where we did shots of expresso all night until we parted around 5am and Andrae was sent across the Atlantic, back to the 'real' world.

Day to Day Happenings-I haven't posted in a while, because not too much has happened. A combination of crappy weather (conveniently during the weekends) and low funds have limited my excursions around the city. After Andrae left in early Janurary, I had a bit of a rough time. it was difficult to watch him go, along with all of the reminders of home... After a while I got sick of feeling sorry for myself and set about enjoying the time I have here. So life has fell into a familiar rythm.

I work early mornings and most evenings, which leave long afternoon breaks. These are spent over lazy lunches or gossiping over Turkish tea with friends, and recently at the expensive gym I joined in attempt to shed my 'winter coat' (but, hey at least the shower there has constant hot water!!). I'm generally enjoying the inane pleasures of life here, whether it's picking up a loaf of fresh bread or finding some peace on a ferryboat as it chugs down the Boshporus..

I've also began learning Turkish again from a fellow Turk teacher, Ozlem. I was hoping she'd teach me how tell off the taxi drivers but for the moment I'm on 'this is a chair' and 'this is not a chair', which has yet to come up in conversation.

Itchy Feet- After being inspired by a friend's pics of watching elephants bathe in the jungle, I got quite an unexpected itch to go to Asia. So after i collected all of my krusch (change), I've recently bought a ticket and will be off in only a few short weeks. I'm looking forward to experiencing some seriouse culture shock, trekking thru some jungle, and frying on beaches. To add to the excitement, I'll also be meeting up with my good friend Vicki. Together we plan on having a great adventure in Thailand!!

Andrae dancing with our usual waiter, Ashley from Wales, and the turkish actor Andrae dozing in the wee hours of the morning at the airport, but doesn't he look cute? Andrae around 5am, I was trying to be sneaky and get a pic of the 'ghost' behind him..i guess not such a nice thing to do.. Burcu and her sister,Asli ready to dig into a Turkish style breakfast, namely bread and cheese! can't go wrong with that i say. ahh..the bane of my existence..the older apartments have these. manual furnaces that must be lit before every shower. wouldn't be so bad is the shower had consistent hot water and pressure, not fun in a freezing bathroom i came home to a birthday cake, made specially by my roomie!! behind the cake is our 'oven'. i guess real, good size ovens don't come standard in apartments here cumartise pazarr-saturday market, every sat, the parking garage across street is transformed into a huge market with tons of products, but my fav are the thousands of fresh fruits, veggies, and cheese lined up in every hue of the rainbow.. katie and chris sitting on Turkish cushions, having just finished up some tea, soaking up the sunset Chris checking out the view of the Maiden's Tower, where a father stowed away his daughter from potential boyfriends..hmm, i'm surprised mom and dad haven't thought of that checking out the skyline from the maiden's tower check out how big that moon is! me and Katie in the tower..checking out the sunset a great treat, a free party on a boat sailing the bosphorus throughout the evening with a dancer too! a dancer at our work party, a boat rented that cruised the Bosphorus
