August 12th,
Wow!! I made it all, 20+ hours of traveling. This trip wasn't that bad..the worst part was leaving at Indy when I made some pretty stupid mistakes that completely stressed me and poor Andrea out..this included not realizing that I was flying into LaGuardia and had to get across New York to JFK for my flight to Athens. I kinda fell apart, but it didn't turn out to be a problem (there's a bus that runs between airports). After that the trip was fine, a little long though. I got like 3 or 4 hours of sleep on my overnight flight and was pretty exhausted from dragging my carry on all over...it must have weighed 20lbs.
But anyway, I made it with little incident to Crete the largest island in Greece. Below are some pics of my trip and area...(sorry about all of the scenery pictures, next time I'll take more of me and my new friends). While there are definitely cons of living here, I have to say I've never seen more beautiful water, skies, and old buildings (just like you said Trent).
(scroll all way down for pics, i had to # the descriptions-also additional info when click on pics)
(1) After a few hours of sleep on the plane, this was my first view of Greece after I lifted the shade:
(2) Here is my apartment, notice that the mess is mine:
(3) Here's Europe for you, electricity can only be turned on by using a small key from the key chain that unlocks the door. I'm not sure why, It's not like there's air conditioning.
(4) We get the room at a discounted rate, but others pay 50 euros ($65.50) a night and this is the kinda bathroom in our room...gotta love it!! And yes that tiny trash can is where all of the toilet paper is thrown--as in you don't flush it. I'm getting nervous because it's only Sunday and I don't think that the trash gets removed till Friday...good thing I packed incense..haha.
(5) But to make up for the bathroom this what is only a two minute walk away:
(6) A view of the city, Hania:
(7) My first night, with no nap we walked into town and explored.
Crete was heavily bombed during World War II, and left many ruins. The Greeks took some of these ruins and turned them into the most beautiful restaurants:
(8) This is the ceiling and walls of a restaurant in a ruins that we ate in:
(9) The next day our class of 9 was shown around the city and I saw Chania's beautiful harbor:
(10) These are my classmates:
(11) This is me and Mariah, it's a really bad picture of me but the only one I have:
That's all for now, I miss you all.
