Udaipur Around the Lakes

Text written in: English

Udaipur was one of our favourite stops on our trip, as you can see from the photos it was really picturesque.  We arrived in the afternoon and found our hotel, it was overlooking the Fateh Sager Lake and had a magnificent view, unfortunately we were on the ground floor but the rooftop restaurant was a great place to take it all in.  We were now on our last 2 days with Salim and then we would be on our own.  He took us to the City Palace, drove us around the Lake Palace and organised for us to see beautiful gardens and generally get used to the place.

That evening we all went out to dinner as this was to be our last meal together, we had a brilliant time with Salim and could really appreciate the benefits of having a driver and we would really miss him, we went for a traditional Indian meal, steel trays, lots of dahl, chappatis and rice and I think it cost us about 3 quid for us all, including drinks.... amazing!

The next day we had to say goodbye to our trusted driver and friend, we handed over a few gifts for him and his family and wrote some comments in his 'service book' (All drivers have one), if anyone needs a recommendation for any travel through Rajasthan, please let us know and we can send you his details.

The next couple of days we were by ourselves, we slept, shopped, Tom got a really nice Rajasthan style jacket that looks a bit snug but lay off those big mac's and should fit perfect.

Udaipur is also the location for the James Bond film 'Octopussy' and all the bars and restaurants play the movie at 7pm every night, it was great to see it again and recognise the location and the streets, they even kept all the same names. We watched the film in one of the Many rooftop locations and saw a breath-taking sunset over the lake.

On our last day we made our way up to the Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel in the City Palace compound and had High Tea in the main Banquet Hall. Having a high tea was a highlight and we felt very British with our scones and jam.

We were sad to leave Udaipur but knew it was time and we were looking forward to getting even closer to our beaching holiday in Goa.
