More about Betania

Text written in: English

Life in Betania is happy and peaceful as ever. I spend most of my time in the jungle next to the Crocodile Lake but venture out to Betania on occasion. Mostly to watch football matches between communities. I like football and am the proud godmother of the Tangoa family foorball team. They are called Associacion Deportiva Isa Sina. Isa Sina was the name of their father. They are going to print my shipibo name on their shirts. That is quite nice of them.

Football matches usually happen on Sundays since nobody works on Sundays.

I have also attended a community dance in Betania. It was great fun to dance again. It works a bit differently in that they don't dance in groups. It is strictly male, female partnerships. It started a bit slow because the men were waiting for the courage of beer. The dance was held in the main street with big speakers and Milke playing CD's. The music included some of his band's (Los Shippies) and other local music (very Latin-American). We had to leave at about 11h00 since we had to catch the 04h00 boat to Pucallpa the next day. I was very dissapointed.

Other than that I only go to Betania when we leave for Pucallpa. It involves packing up the entire camp and carting everything back to Senora Paola's house in Betania (a 40 minute walk from Betania). We sleep there for the night and catch the boat the next morning. Depending on the number of stops on the way, the boat ride takes between 4 and 6 hours. Betto usually strings my hammock up in the boat so it is quite comfortable.
