Betania is not on the Ball of Dirt map so to give you an idea it is a four hour boat ride up the Uyacali river from Pucallpa. In a speed boat it would be about an hour to an hour and a half. Well, they said it would be four but turned out to be six. I will taka a photo of the boat because to describe it would be very difficult.
Betania is a small community of about 700 people and they are all related. Betania was founded 37 years ago by Pedro's father and then the whole family moved there. So it is fairly new. The people are very friendly, peaceful and happy. They make money off selling benanas and arts and crafts. It is extremely hot here.
We have been staying at Pedro's mother's house and will go deeper into the jungle when we return to Betania. It has no walls and consist of two large rooms. One room is the kitchen area and the other the living/sleeping area. We sleep on the floor under mosquito nets. Very few of the houses here have four walls. It is simply too hot. Our house is a bit more than half a story up in the air and Pedro jokingly refers to it as the penthouse.
They are building me a house in the jungle at the shaman centre. It is a 40 minute walk (approximately) from Betania. It is situated next to the Crocodile Lake, which is so remote that is is not on a map. Some people from the Pucallpa tourism bureau visited the lake to gain information to market Betania as a tourist destination. It is a pity on the one hand and good for the financial wellbeing of the community on the other.
